Auto Repair – How Do You Clean or Check a Mass Air Flow Sensor

This video tells you about how to clean a mass airflow sensor. In this video, you will get steps to clean or check a mass airflow sensor. By following these steps, you can easily clean a mass airflow sensor that is used on fuel-injected vehicles. Mass airflow sensor works well according to resistance ranges.

How do you clean or check on mass airflow sensor? A mass airflow sensor is used on fuel-injected vehicles to tell the computer how much air is going in to the engine. A… usually it is mounted a… between the air filter assembly and the intake a… it has an electrical connection going to it and it will be screwed in to this plenum work here so that’s in the airflow.

A… now to check it a… for… for cleaning purposes or… or for inspection purposes, it needs to be removed a… so first thing you want to do is you want to carefully disconnect the electric connection. a… by lifting up on the release tab and pulling it up, kind of better side and than there will be couple of screws holding on this place sometimes there will be a security screw a…

In this case, there is security torque screw and so you want o make sure you have appropriate tool for that a… so you take the screws out and then you want to carefully pull straight up.

Now a mass airflow sensor will have a… one or more very fine wires. These wires are usually made out of Platinum because Platinum has very measureable resistance characteristics. And what we will be measuring in this case the resistance through the wire as air flows across it and so if the air… if there’s more air or the air is cooler a…it requires more voltage to keep the a… the wire a… at a constant a…voltage.

And so the computer interprets that as a… an… an indication on how much air is moving into the motor. So once its removed, you can use a… commercially available carbonator cleaner and you can spray the wires and this will remove a… any oxidation a… that might have built up on the wire that would affect a… its accuracy and then you want to let this air dry. a… you don’t want to wipe it with anything because again you will end up damaging the wires.

So once you have sprayed with carb cleaner, you want to let it air dry a… and then you can reinstall it.

Once you remove and clean the mass airflow sensor, you are going to want to check it. Now different mass air flow sensors from different manufacturers are going to have different acceptable ranges a… but affectively what you are looking to do is check the resistance between certain pins on the connector and when you do that you are going to want to get a… an… an Ohms range that falls with in the spects that the manufacturer specifies.

In this case a… we are getting a… 11.8 mili Ohms, which is fine for that particular wire. If you are outside of that range or you are getting no resistance at all then the mass airflow sensor most likely damaged and needs to be replaced. If however your resistance ranges are appropriate, a… then the mass airflow sensor should be fine a…with a good cleaning and it can then be reinstalled.
