How to change a wheel of your car
Today we are going to learn a simple and basic technique of changing a wheel. Our guest Ian Gillespie is going to perform the method. He is an active of member of AA Patrol. Here is the video of a method, enjoy…
Hello. My name is Lain Gillespie. Today I am going to tell you how to change a flat tyre quickly and more importantly safely. Ok at this point we need to secure the car. We need to put it in the first gear, we need to make sure the hand break is on and we are on flat, level ground as well. Here’s our stuff we need. We’ve got a spare tyre, we’ve got a jack, we have got a toeing eye that’ll come clear in a minute. We’ve also got our wheel brace as well.
Also we are going to need our reflective jacket and if you take a triangle with you in the back of you car put that at-least 20 metres behind the car.
Ok now we’ve got our tyre. First thing we need to do is get this hub cap off. Now that can be a problem in itself. Some people cable-tie these on so you use a set of cutters. It’s always worth carrying those. If not, one my tips is to actually use the toeing eye, it’s always got a screwed edge on the corner. Into the side and just pull it off like so. Once you have actually got the hub cap off we are going to expose the full wheel and nuts that we are going to be undoing.
The one in the middle there I’d have to worry about. Some vehicles are fitted with an anti theft nut as well. You will find the little key normally in the glove box or in the back of the car again. That just slides over the nut and allows you to take that one off. Always take that one off first. Now before we even think about jacking this car up we need to slacken these off, and we will be doing that with the wrench they supply. So onto the first one, just gently slacken it off, to the next one. Ok we just undo these nuts so we are ready now to jack the vehicle up. Very important part this is because we need to get this jack in exactly the right position. Each car has a jacking point that is reinforced. If you put it in the wrong position, you can damage your car severely. Double check on top of your jack you will find the picture there. It’s got the jacking point here. It’s telling us where to put the jack underneath the vehicle. So its got some other information about the position of the hand brake, making sure its fully applied and also making sure it’s in first gear. The other one is making sure we don’t climb under this vehicle when it’s on this jack, just for safety. On this one it slides under the car and now we are ready to actually take the vehicle up. Ok! Car is jacked up, we are ready to take the wheel off. We have already loosened the nuts from earlier on so we just literally take out the four nuts. At this point we are ready to take the tyre off and what we do is we roll it underneath the car so that for any reason if the car falls off the jack it will fall on the tyre and not fall straight down onto the floor. Ok here is our spare tyre. Hat we are going to have a quick look at before we fit the tyre is some of the markings here. The first one to look at here is the maximum missile speed of the tyre. It’s because it’s a slightly different tyre to the ones come off the vehicle. So that’s 50 miles an hour. The other one is just telling us the type of nuts we have to use for this. Its telling us we can use the ones we have just taken off. On different manufacturers you have different nuts to go with the spare wheel so just be very sure by looking in your owner’s hand-book on that one.
So we are going to roll the tyre just till we get in front of the hub itself and then gently lift it onto the wheel and then you rotate just until the four holes line up with each other. When they are in that position then just start one nut then the opposing nut and then the other two finally go in. Ok! Four wheel nuts nipped up then next thing to do is remove our tyre. That means now we can come straight down with the car. Wind the handle nice and slowly. Once we actually get down on the floor, we can now remove the jack. Now we are ready to literally just tighten up these four wheel nuts. Ok! It’s going to be clockwise to tighten. Little bit of force on that and then move onto the opposite side wheel nut. Same again. Ok! That’s the four wheel nuts tightened. But how tight do we do them? A lot of people ask me that. This will only allow us to do them up so tight. What we need to do is get them as physically tight with this, then straight into a local garage and they will use a special piece of kit just to tighten them up and make sure they are ok. Well I think that went to plan, but the only reason it went to plan is because I had everything I needed. That is inclusive of a fully inflated spare wheel, its road legal. I also had all the tools I needed. Also the locking wheel key not featured on this. But that’s also a very important part of the kit required to take this wheel off. Also wear a reflective jacket so all the road users can see me when I am down on the road changing the wheel.
