Mechanics Tools – Car Seat Safety

This article is a must read for all new parents or parents of young kids. Car crashes are the cause of thousands of deaths every year. So if you have a newborn baby or a young child then you must make sure that his or her safety is taken care of. This particular article informs you about the different kinds of car seats for kids of different ages and the procedure to install the car seat in the car. The two different types of car seats mentioned here are the convertible and the combination seats.

Hi, I am Claudia Romo. I am with the inter prevention program at Children’s Medical Center. We are currently in the safety stop and we are gonna talk to parents a little bit about the different types of cars seats. This is a great safety story, where you can learn about insulation and different education on the types of car seats that we have. So let us get started with the first seat.

Our first seat is called the convertible seat. This is a great seat for infants to toddlers. One of the things that you want to look for a seat like this, a convertible seat is you wanna make sure you know the baby’s weight and height. And a great way to tell is by looking at the stickers. So each of the different types of car seats will have a sticker on it that tells you the height and weight requirement of the seat. So definitely always take a look at this. The next seat we are gonna move on to is called the combination seat.

This is a great seat for toddlers and older kids. This particular seat can be used in two ways. It harnesses the child in up to forty pounds. Once the child reaches the forty pounds, the harnesses come off and we can use it as a booster seat using a lap and shoulder belt. This is a great investment. The other seat that we have got is a high back booster seat. This seat is for older kids. It needs to be used for a child who is 32 or 100 pounds and whose height is 30, 40 50, 70 inches. As you know, there are a lot of different types of seats on the market and all of them have different height and weight requirements so you wanna pay particular attention to those labels.

In addition you wanna make sure that you know if you are using this type of seat, you wanna look at the different accessories for them and take your kid with you, make sure that they pick up the seat that they like best. Like this one has a really cool — for drinks and kids tend to like that a lot, and it is also great because it adjusts in height and you can move it up and up and up to reach the height limit for the seat. Today we are gonna learn a little bit about how to install this convertible seat. So – of the things that you wanna do is you wanna take your seat belt and we are gonna root it right under here. If you look under here, it tells you that this is the place for a rear facing seat where you have to put your seat belt through it.

So we are gonna take this seatbelt and we are gonna root it right through this half. And it’s gonna come right out through the other side. And one of the things you wanna make sure is that this seat belt isn’t twisted. You wanna make sure it is nice and flat. What you are gonna do next is connect it and give it quick tag to make sure it is connected. Now you are gonna come over here to where your seat belt is and you are going to pull it all the way out. And then you are gonna let it go a little bit and make sure that it is locking in place. Okay. Then let it go. Taking one hand you are gonna put some weight into the seat and from this side you are gonna pull nice and tight.

Make sure that the excess is coming out. Again a little bit of weight, give it a good tug and take the excess out. Right where the seat belt is, you should take it. The car seat should not move more than one inch side from to side or front to back. The second step is to make sure that the baby is harnessed in the car seat the right way. So let’s go ahead and put the baby in the car seat. What you wanna do is you wanna make sure that the baby is in there all nice and snug, so we are gonna go ahead and connect all of the pieces.

Now we are gonna click it into the buckle. And you wanna make sure you give it a nice tug to make sure it is clicked in place. The next thing you wanna make sure is that this chest clip is right at armpit level. And you wanna make sure that this is nice and snug so above this I shouldn’t be able to pinch. See how I can pinch this. If you can pinch it, it is not snug enough. So you wanna make sure, you tighten it, nice and tight, and now I can’t pinch these top harnesses. The only thing you wanna make sure when the child is rear facing is that these straps right here are always at the shoulders or below the shoulders.

So with this baby, baby would not be able to be moved to the next level until the shoulders actually passed the next level. So what we have shown you here today is just one insulation with one kind of car seat and one vehicle. But do you know that there are many types of vehicles out there and many types of car seats. No worry. Children’s Medical Center has a dedicated car seat line: # 214-456-2059 that you can call to make an appointment with a certified technician. When you call us we will refer you to a location that is nearest to you, so that you can get your car seat inspected with a inter prevention specialist.

We were curious about how Rasine would do at the beach. Other parents had told us to expect maybe an hour at the beach, max, since once a baby gets a single grain of sand in her eye, it’s all over. But Rasine surprised us. She played quietly and even …
