Professional Cooling System Maintenance (by Run-Rite) Pt.2
“This thing is about 6 years old and done about 125 to 130,000 miles.”
“About 130,000 miles .About that. The car still has the original belts and hose which I know if I had to replace those, I had to replace those years ago. But you know like everybody else I forget, I get busy doing everything else and forget about taking care of my own stuff.”
“I can tell exactly what you have done with this. Its like this, you can only change the antifreeze once or twice. We are going to check the condition of it. This is a pH meter. This is a good way to do this much better than using just the little ball meter, that way you can check the viscosity. Here we compare this .We look at the pinkish brown color that tells the concentration of the antifreeze. We’ve got 50% water and 50% antifreeze. That’s pretty good. Now looking at the green strip its down about 7.5 on the pH scale, just like doing it at the swimming pool. And of course I have checked it twice. The pH is low which means you have some corrosion probably. This thing needs a good cooling system maintenance.
And with these pH strips let me show you what happens when you have water and electricity. Water and aluminum make electricity, and they do that by the way. If you don’t believe me stick some aluminum foil in your mouth and bite down on your fillings and you will get a shock. This is a timing chain cover. Ok now this thing here sits on the front of the engine with the timing chain behind. The water pump sits on the front of it. You can see its all corroded in here, and when its really corroded it probably will not hold a gasket for very long. Here you can see it has almost eaten through. That’s the corrosive action of a cooling system that’s long neglected. There is another common problem in V-type engine especially v8 loosing coolant in the back of the intake manifold. This is an aluminum four barrel manifold. Look at this, this is the cooling system surface right here where it meets the cylinder head and it can never hold a gasket. If you look at this one, it has almost eaten holes right through it. Again antifreeze ruined this manifold; you could have saved a lot of money and had a much better engine. It is also important for the operation of the engine. The engine coolant sensor of the computer sits in this coolant. If it gets really corrosive we can enhance the static charge and drive the computer crazy so, if u want to make your engine last a long time, with all the aluminum in these engines today, to make the computer system work you need to flush it. Within this plastic tank, there is another tank, where the automatic transmission fluid is circulated to cool the transmission. Look at this,”
