Welcome back to the engine workshop. We are here today to talk about your vehicles cooling system. All modern vehicles have liquid cool engines. They use coolant to remove heat from the engine.
The heating coolant is pumped to the radiator where the heat is removed from the coolant by the air circulating through the radiator. With much of the heat removed the coolant is circulated back to the engine and the cycle is repeated. Now this process seems pretty simple whereas there are several components. They must do their jobs efficiently and at the right time or whether it is summer or winter your vehicles cooling system must operate efficiently at all time or severe engine damages can occur. If you don’t understand your cooling system let us look at the major components.
The thermostat is generally located on the top front of the engine at the end of the upper radiator hole inside. The thermostat’s job is to realize coolant to the radiator when it reaches its set temperature usually about 190 degrees. In common cooling systems problem is it is stuck thermostat. If a thermostat sticks when it is in a close position over heating will resolve.
