Often a car with stuck thermostat and only be driven a few miles before it over heats. It is important to get a thermostat problem fixed immediately.
You can usually replace a thermostat at home in less than hour. Drain the coolant below the level of the thermostat unbolt and remove the housing then pull the thermostat out. Clean the gas get surface then install the new thermostat in the gas kit. Make sure the spring end goes into or towards the engine.
The water pump which is operated by an engine driven belt keeps coolant flowing thru and to the radiator. A filled water pump may also cause over heating either by reduce cooling efficiency or coolant flask. Replacing the water pump at home is relatively easy although some components need to be moved out of the way coming out of the jar or unfolding the the pump. Cleaning the gasket surface installing the new pump and tightening the bolts to specification. Be sure to apply the correct seal and tight.
The radiators job is to officially transfer heat to the air so anything obstructing air flow or coolant flow through the radiator can lead to over heating. You can replace your radiator very easily in an hour or to by using simple tools. With the coolant drained disconnect the fans, transmission lines and radiator hoses then unbolt and remove the radiator. Be careful not to bump or damage the radiator tubes which could cause leaks.
While you wouldn’t normally think of coolant as a component it is a vitally essential part of your cooling system. Check your coolant level regularly and change it every 3 years or 30,000 miles more often if recommended by the manufacturer. One hour coolant can exhilarate corrosion. It can also allow freezing in cold weather which can lead to severe engine damage.
The components of your cooling system work together to keep your engine safe from over heating. Like the link of weak chain the failure of one of the components can lead to over heating and expensive engine damage.
But the good news is that you can replace all these components easily at home. Your Haynes manual will give you all the details on your particular vehicle.
