How to Change an Oxygen Sensor
An engine is most vital part of every automobile. As it compromises, many parts, number of sensors are connected to watch how things are going inside an engine. O2 sensors basically monitors the proportion of oxygen (O2) in the gas or liquid being used in a vehicle. Failing which can make your smoke terribly, due to increased amount of carbon and other harmful pollutants. However, you can easily come to know, about its condition by simply plug in a diagnostic tool, and reading the code value. In this video you will come to know how to identify the bad O2 sensor and how to replace it.
The first place you gonna find out if you have a bad oxygen sensor, is your check engine light will come on. I have got my Car MD Tool to find out, what the problem is. First connect the tool your vehicles OVD2 Port. If you are not sure where it is, there is a carmd.com for you cars location of OVD2 port. Second turn the ignition on. At this point you do not need to start the engine.
Next, wait for the four beeps, indicate the test is complete. The first scene you gonna notice is you have the different color light here. The green light means go, you are ready for a road trip. The middle light is yellow. If it lights up, there could be a little bit problem in there. If the red light is there, you have got a problem, and you are not ready to go anywhere.
The next thing you wanna look at, is the screen. This is where you see the code number. As you can see here, we have a P0038 code. The next step is to plug it in the carmd.com website to find out what the problem is. I have already plug this in to my computer. And what i found is what i have a faulty oxygen sensor, fake one sensor to.
The diagnostic tool told me which O2 sensor is to replace. There are usually 2 to 4 O2 sensors on your vehicle. In this case the one after the catalytic converter is bad. The first you wanna do is to find the electro co connector. Just connect that first. The way to do that is go to the right to O2 Sensor, look at the wires, and follow the wires back to that junction bar. Once you find the electro co connector, the all you need to a flat tip screw driver. Just push the tab on electro co connector, and pull. Once you disconnect the electro co connector, the all you need is an open end wrench tool undue the O2 sensor.
90% of the O2 Sensor, are 7 -8’s. Take the wrench and go clock wise. This one came out pretty easy. If you find one is very tough and hard to undue then just spray some multy purpose spray lubricant. It will make your job easy. Take out by rotating clock wise, you can do it by hands, pull out straight out. There you have it, very dirty O2 Sensor.
So here we are with new O2 sensor. Wow, what a difference, no carbon built up. Once you go the new O2 sensor, all you have to do, insert it in to the original hole and turn it clock wise, once you screwed it in by hands, then go ahead and get your boxing wrench, and tighten it clock wise, just snug. The hear of the exhaust, actually swolle up the threads, keep it in till next visit. The next step is to plug the O2 sensor in. Make sure the connection is nice and clean.
Right up in to the original junction box, and plug it in. Now that i plug in my electro co connection of my O2 sensor, I am gonna go and plug my diagnostic tool in, to make sure that my code has been cleared.
