  1. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: Luxury Car Bumpers

The Institute of Releasing Results have a series of 3 and 6 mile an hour bumper tests of 11 mid sized luxury cars.

The tests are designed to evaluate how well the vehicle’s bumper protects it in everyday fender bender type of collisions. The institute’s bumper barrier represents the height and the design of a typical car bumper. Some vehicles have bumpers that are lower and that can lead to under ride, especially with SUVs and pick ups. None of the vehicles in this group performed especially well. The best performer was the Saab 9 - 3 with about $5000 damage, in all 4 tests.

The worst performer - the Infiniti G35, with almost $14,000 damage, in the same four tests. The institute’s full width barrier test should be an easy one to ace. Its conducted at 6 miles an hour, a brisk walking speed and the energy of the crash can be spread across the entire front end of the vehicle. This Mercedes “C”Class did not perform well. Its bumper is mounted far too low to engage the barrier. That resulted in virtually no damage to the bumper but significant damage to the headlamp, the grill, the hood, air-conditioning condenser and the radiator.
